Associate - Cities and Strategic Transport Planning

We have a range of projects and opportunities with key clients including Transport for London, HS2 Ltd., major airports, public authorities and a range of private developers in London and overseas.  We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Associate skilled in development planning, surface access issues, strategic planning and policy work to strengthen our central London team, to manage and lead projects and to make a significant contribution to work winning. 
You will be responsible for managing teams on a range of projects including development masterplans, individual development sites, transport strategies and surface access solutions in the UK and overseas, bidding for and winning work from a range of public and private sector clients and the development, training and mentoring junior staff on a project basis. 
You should have at least 10 years’ experience in the industry, with excellent technical and management skills and the ability to engage creatively and positively in the development of transport planning strategies and solutions for developments, urban areas and city authorities.  You should have experience of transport assessment techniques and of statutory planning and regulatory processes related to development and transport infrastructure. You will have a sound understanding of private and public transport in London and the UK and an enthusiasm to develop new approaches to transport strategy formulation and to the use of data to support assessment and the visualisation of transport issues and outcomes.
You will be part of an established transport planning team based in London working on cities, development and strategic planning projects. The role involves responsibility for the day-to-day management of a range of projects in these areas, direct client contact, technical assurance, delivery to programme and budget and oversight of the project team. As part of your role you will work closely with other disciplines within Arup and outside.  As an Associate in this field you will undertake business development and work-winning, promote Arup in external markets, contribute to knowledge development and provide support to peers and younger staff.
This will involve:
  • Supporting a varied portfolio of existing and potential clients;
  • Applying your technical and managerial expertise in relevant areas of work which will include masterplanning, transport design and engineering, transport and environmental assessment, public transport, walking, cycling and policy and strategy work;
  • Being accountable to Project Directors and the business for the delivery of projects to agreed deadlines and with consistently high levels of quality;
  • Managing staff resources and skills within project teams;
  • Delivering excellent commercial performance on projects, monitoring delivery against agreed budgets and managing scope, programme and financial change;
  • Communicating clearly, succinctly and persuasively, both verbally and in writing;
  • Preparing bids and proposals together with associated business development activities to secure new opportunities;
  • Negotiating project appointments in conjunction with the business leadership and in line with Arup policy and requirements;
  • Representing Arup at client, stakeholder and public meetings, to wider client organisations and within the transport planning industry as a whole;
  • Being active in promoting knowledge-sharing, best practice and the development of new techniques amongst staff and on projects;
  • Fostering the wider career development and wellbeing of staff within the local business, in support of the senior management team;
  • Liaising with other disciplines and businesses within Arup on project delivery and project creation;
  • Supporting recruitment and training activity within the local business.
This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic and dynamic individual with good communication and interpersonal skills, a deep interest in transport and cities and an ambition to work on exciting and high profile jobs.
  • University degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. civil engineering, geography, economics, mathematics).
  • A Chartered professional qualification (e.g. CEng, TPP) or equivalent and appropriate membership of a relevant professional institution (e.g. CIHT, ICE, CILT, TPS).
  • 10-15 years of experience in transport planning in the fields of development, cities and strategic planning;
  • Demonstrable record of managing the technical and delivery aspects of projects related to cities, development and strategic planning, with a range of complexity and fee budgets;
  • Experience of engagement with public and private sector clients both on projects and in relation to business development;
  • Experience of successful technical stakeholder engagement;
  • Experience of engagement with non-technical stakeholders including through public consultation;
  • Proficiency in report writing and oral communication skills;
  • Proficiency in data collection techniques, data analysis and interpretation;
  • Experience in local highway network analysis (including junction capacity assessments and design);
  • Experience of applying transport design guidance in a cities context (e.g. DMRB, Manual for Streets, cycle and bus design guidance);
  • Experience of UK Town & Country Planning and Environmental Impact Assessment processes;
  • Experience of working with multi-disciplinary professional teams including architects, planning, environmental and engineering advisors;
  • Knowledge of microsimulation techniques;
  • Knowledge of planning for walking, cycling, bus operations and public realm enhancements;
  • Experience of mentoring and training team members to advance skills development and career progression.
  • A Masters degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. transport planning);
  • Previous experience in a consultancy environment;
  • Experience of working on projects in the London area;
  • Experience of acting as an expert witness on transport issues at public inquiries or similar proceedings would be an advantage.
