Rail Systems Leader

The primary offices where we offer these services include Toronto, Montreal, New York, Houston, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.
We are seeking a senior leader to join our dynamic team, to help lead and grow our rail capability. We’re looking for someone with experience and a passion for the development of rail engineering systems, embedding rail systems and integration into the planning and delivery of projects, business development and creation of opportunities where innovative value solutions can be implemented.
The role reports to the Canada Infrastructure Leader with liaison with Leaders across the Americas and Arup’s global rail network.
The role will be based in our Toronto office; travel across the Americas is expected as and when required.
The successful candidate will be charged to further develop the Arup Rail Systems disciplines offering along with, as a minimum, the following service offerings:
- Performance modelling
- Optioneering and concept design
- Development of performance and technical specifications
- Detailed design and delivery in collaboration with contractors and suppliers
- Operational and maintenance performance optimization
- Project assurance and governance
- All categories of rail from high speed, regional, commuter and metro services, light rail and automated people movers.
Disciplines involved in delivering these services will include: Rolling stock, signaling, train control and traffic management systems, railway communications, all forms of traction, permanent way, systems engineering (including specialist areas such as safety, RAM, EMC, HF), Performance modelling (including timetable, network and power modelling) asset management
Other responsibilities include:
•Recruiting, developing and leading the Rail Systems group. Ensuring that the correct skills are developed to serve the market needs and that the team is exposed to a healthy pipeline of public and private sector work. The Leader will also advise on team formation in the delivery of services along with overseeing project delivery and efficiency by driving project governance and commercial success.
•Leading and managing the Systems Engineering and integration processes for new, and upgrading existing rail systems, including the definition and control of the System Architecture, Requirements Management, System Integration Functions, and Knowledge Database for the whole system ( across all project disciplines), the EMC Management, Software Management and System Performance and Simulation.
•Working in concert with other disciplines, group and business leaders and as part of the overall Rail team to set strategy and direction for the development and delivery of our services.
•Developing and maintaining client relationships with key organizations working in the transport sector, including Owners, Investors, Operators and Contractors
•Developing compelling solutions and presenting to clients; through formal procurement and in solution-based approaches.
•Responsible for the delivery of large multi-disciplinary projects from initial planning through to detailed design
•Collaborating on programs for Digital Rail /Virtual Rail through such tools as data engineering, BIM and GIS
•Through the development of the Rail Systems hub, supporting regional and international projects as required.
•Bringing innovation, creativity and global best practice to the provision of Rail Systems within urban and regional environments
•Sharing knowledge and global best practice to develop the overall capability of the Rail Systems team
•Business Planning and Forecasts
•Rail Engineering Systems experience gained both in the Americas and internationally
•Over 20 years’ experience in the rail systems engineering/advisory.
•Relevant experience in design and advisory on large scale Rail Systems project within a multi-disciplinary environment.
•Experience in international implementation and requirements as well as differing cultures, design and build leadership, project management, and technical experience,
•Broad experience across the Rail Systems disciplines with specialization in at least two Rail Systems disciplines.
•A familiarization in Communications Based Train Control and traditional relay-based systems and signaling principles; a specialization being an advantage
•Registered Professional Engineer with either P. Eng. or P.E. License
•Eligible to work in the U.S. and Canada.
•Knowledgeable railway standards such as CENELEC, AREMA, MIL-STD, IEEE and EN
•Demonstrable understanding of the application of Systems and Safety Engineering Concepts, including Design, Verification & Validation, and System Integration
•Demonstrable understanding of the application System Safety Certification processes and RAMS
•Across the implications of digital and data in the planning and development of Rail Systems
•Knowledgeable of new technologies, Industry 4.0 and the UNSDG’s
•15 years of managerial responsibility in system design, design management, network planning, standards management, technology evaluation, system engineering and system assurance of E&M systems for large-scale rail projects in a multi-disciplinary environment.
•Professional qualifications in electrical or mechanical engineering (or similar), and project management. Corporate membership of a relevant recognized professional institute
•Thorough understanding of the how rail advisory and technical skills apply across a project life-cycle.
•Proven record in delivery of large multi-disciplinary planning and/or design projects
•Experience in working for both prime clients (Owners) and Design and Build Contractors in the delivery of major rail projects in the Americas and internationally
•Ability to communicate across all levels of project and client team organizations, with excellent team and client relationship skills.
•Excellent communication skills
